MyCEP Privacy Policy

This privacy policy governs your use of the software application, My CEP ("Application"), for mobile devices that was created by Georgia Tech Research Corporation (GTRC). The Application is a smartphone based system that provides tools to manage activities related to your participation in the Cognitive Empowerment Program (CEP), a research program operated by Emory University in partnership with Georgia Tech.

What information does the Application obtain and how is it used?

You are utilizing this Application to participate in a research study.  Your executed informed consent and HIPAA authorization will govern your participation.   Registration is required to participate in this research study.

When you download and log in to the Application with your study-provided user name and password, the Application will obtain some of the information you have provided to study administrators.  This information may include your first name, the first name of your care partner (also participating in the study), and information on the program activities in which you are participating (such as the name and schedule of the activity).

This information will be used to personalize the Application to best support your participation in the research program, such as presenting your personal schedule of program activities and allowing you to access education content to support these activities.

Automatically Collected Information

The Application collects certain information automatically to understand how the Application is being used by you.  This information allows us to improve the Application and the services offered by the research program, and additionally may be used to answer other research questions.  The information we collect includes details about the mobile device you use (e.g. the type of device and its operating system and screen resolution), which Application screens are visited and for how long, and what buttons or other screen elements you use. 

In the event that the Application crashes or fails, technical details will be shared with us through  the Bugsnag error monitoring and reporting service.  This information helps us understand where and why the Application failed and no personal information is included.  Some technical information about your device is included.  You can see what device information is collected on the Bugsnag website.

Do third parties see and/or have access to information obtained by the Application?

We will share your information with third parties only in the ways that are described in this privacy statement.

We may disclose User provided and Automatically Collected Information:

  • As required by law, such as to comply with a subpoena, or similar legal process;

  • When we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, protect your safety or the safety of others, investigate fraud, or respond to a government request;

  • With our trusted services providers who work on our behalf, do not have an independent use of the information we disclose to them, and have agreed to adhere to the rules set forth in the privacy statement.

What are my opt-out rights?

You can stop all collection of information by the Application easily by uninstalling the Application. You may use the standard uninstall processes as may be available as part of your mobile device or via the mobile application marketplace or network. You can also request to opt-out of the research study via email, at empowerment@emory.edu.

Securing your data

We are concerned about safeguarding the confidentiality of your information. We provide physical, electronic, and procedural safeguards to protect information we process and maintain. For example, we limit access to this information to authorized employees and contractors who need to know that information in order to operate, develop or improve our Application. Please be aware that, although we endeavor to provide reasonable security for information we process and maintain, no security system can prevent all potential security breaches.

Changes

This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time for any reason. We will notify you of any changes to our Privacy Policy by posting the new Privacy Policy here and informing you via email or text message. You are advised to consult this Privacy Policy regularly for any changes, as continued use is approval of all changes.
